Tagged In Motion: Augmented Reality Art

DAIM: Tagged in Motion

Although this is a tad old, I didn’t see it widely posted so here it is. Tagged in Motion is an augmented reality based 3d graffiti art simulation. In a way it could also be considered performance art, as the process is just as important as the final output. The German artist, DAIM, dons a sporty HMD and is able to use tracking-markers to position his virtual can of spraypaint in full 3d. This allows the user full freedom to use his real-life surroundings as a virtual 3d canvas. Judging from the tracking markers, a common convention of augmented reality, it looks like they may be using the ARToolKit but they could easily have their own solution.

Video and rant after the jump.

Apple to Build iPod HMD, Make VR Cool?

Apple to make laser hmd ipod

Apple, being the great innovator they are (sarcasm intended), have filed patent for a laser-based portable head-mounted display. Of course, there are already HMDs tailor-made for the iPod video, like the iWear IP230. In Apple’s new concept, the display processing would be removed from the headset and onto an external device (presumably built onto the iPod itself). This device then uses laser technology to beam an image to the glasses via optical cable. The benefit of this method is that the glasses could be small and light-weight, just like regular sunglasses, and probably a bit more incognito.

This seems like it could be a great solution to the issue of the traditional bulky, uncomfortable VR headsets. If any company out there could make VR cool, its Apple. Hell, they could take an off-the-shelf hard-disk, call it a “Time Machine”, and make millions. Oh, wait. They already did!

No joke, I actually had this same exact idea about a month ago. I’ve gotta start getting patents on this shit.
