Big Brother Infects Facebook, Takes a Shit on Your Privacy

The British Police have collaborated with Facebook on a comprehensive surveillance application with aims to do one thing: shit on your privacy. The application, known as ‘The Greater Manchester Police Updates’, gives Facebook users the ability to snitch out their friends if so be it, as well as get information on on-going investigations. This is all well and good, but what Facebook aren’t pimping is the fact the the British police now have back-door access to any and all personal information about you and all your friends, including your political views, sexual interests, copies of all your photos and your social timeline. Even personal data that you yourself cannot have access to, all without a warrant. One can’t help but assume that this system will work in conjunction with the existing video analysis and facial-recognition systems. Scary stuff.
This is eerily reminiscent of Phillip K Dick’s ‘A Scanner Darkly’ and its only a matter of time before other such applications infect the web of social networking. Its really amazing how the science-fiction of yesterday, even from a movie only a few years old, has become the reality of today.
