Grand Theft Autobots: Rollout!

GTA4 Bitches!

I’m not one to be easily swept up on the hype-train, but I have to say that the new Grand Theft Auto is really something else. After waiting on line for almost 2 hours last night, I was beginning to question whether the game would be worth it. But within the first 15 seconds of the intro I knew I was in for a wild ride. Although not quite a perfect game, its surely up there on the list (although still not as good as Shadowrun on the SNES which was like the best game EVER!). On a pure graphical standpoint, the game really shines. All the cars are beautifully rendered and the backdrops are simply breath-taking. Best of all, its modeled after my hometown, New York City. Although not a 100% accurate model, the developers managed to get pretty close to the real thing.

What really strikes a chord with me is the social and political commentary interspersed throughout the world via the radio and television. Hell, they even have an internet *in the game*! Simply amazing. But there was some real thought put into some of this commentary. I don’t want to ruin any surprises, but I don’t think Rockstar really supports the war. Which is surprising since most politicians are so quick to blame video-games for the plight of modern youth, yet have no problems sending real kids into a real war. Its somewhat refreshing to find some intelligent irony in a game most of America would consider degenerate. Although the GTA series has always had some of these anti-establishment themes, the latest title really takes it to another level. Just try watching the in-game tv for bit: comedy gold!

Bottom line, if you own an Xbox360 or a PS3 you simply must buy this game. Its a shame its not out for the PC, because I’d like to be able to play it on my soon-to-be brand-new gaming rig, but here’s to hoping there will be a port. By the way, I’ve already obtained the “Warm Coffee” achievement. With extra cream and sugar, I might add. Just the way I like it!

Futuremark’s Vantage Released

3D Mark's Vantage - PC Benchmark

The new defacto standard in 3d benchmarking has released by Futuremark. Dubbed Vantage, this new 3DMark benchmark utility will push your DirectX10 card further than thought possible. Keep in mind Vista and a modern Dx10 video card are required to run the program. I would write a review (and post the score), but unfortunately my rig is not yet up to snuff, so I have yet to see the demos in real-time. I’ll revisit this topic once my new rig is complete, but damn do those screen-shots look pretty.

If anyone happens to own the Zalman Trimon 3D monitor, please post a comment and let me know how it runs with stereo 3d.

Microsoft Develops Hands-Free Data-Glove

VR Data-gloves

Researchers at Microsoft are hard at work developing an arm-band that can recognize finger movements simply by monitoring muscle activity. Initial tests show the system with as high as 95% accuracy for all 10 fingers and can even register varying levels of pressure. The end result is a unobtrusive hands-free device that can mimic control of something like a data-glove. MS claims this technology can be far more accurate than other more established forms of gesture controls (such as computer vision based solutions).

This device might be useful in mobile applications, also in virtual or augmented reality environments, where a stationary keyboard and mouse setup fails miserably. I imagine using a band like this you could leverage your second hand to aid in typing text messages on a cell-phone, or even better, performing some clandestine wifi hack while sipping a latte in Starbucks looking incognito. Still, most of this experimental technology that Microsoft develops rarely makes it into an actual product. It will be interesting to see if this ever materializes.

HD 3D Movies: The Future is Coming…

Stereo 3D Movies

Tom’s Games has an interesting little piece discussing this upcoming 3d renaissance in Hollywood. 3D movies have been available since way before my time, but it looks like Hollywood is finally putting some money behind this new format. The more I read about the major players the the movie industry shifting toward high-definition stereo 3d film-making, the more I think its actually going to happen. I had gotten a chance to experience the Real D technology when I saw Beowulf on opening night and I can attest, its the real deal.

The defining moment will really be when Cameron finally releases Avatar, set to debut in summer of 2009. Although no definitely release date has been set, supposedly Lucas will be releasing a 3D restoration of the original Star Wars films starting in late 09. The industry really needs to step up and get this technology in the theaters. I can’t wait for the day when watching a 2D movie would be like watching Casablanca today. Also, where is the 3d porn?

Psuedo-Interactive Hologram Girl Disintegrates At The Wave of Your Hand

AirStrike: Interactive Hologram

This little demo from LM3Labs is really quite alluring. They’ve released a video showing a life-sized 3d avatar displayed on what looks like a specially treated sheet of glass and a back-projector. From what I can see, this isn’t a true “hologram” in the sense of the word since it would need to be viewable from any 3d angle. Even so, this is probably the closest to a “help me Obi-Wan Kenobi” moment I’m sure all you Star Wars geeks have been clamoring for.

The creators had this to say, something I can definitely dig:

We believe more in growing the digital world into the real life. This requires new types of display, like real size holography technologies, but also, and more importantly, different interaction methods. No more mice, trackpads, only free-air interactivity can accomodate this vision.

More and more I feel like it is the legacy of the archaic QWERTY keyboard, which was designed specifically to be the most inefficient layout, and the restrictive 2D mouse which are holding back true next-generation 3D computer interfaces. The ultimate computer interface would be that which was wetwired directly into the brain, but the next logical step would be free-form gesture recognition. This type of interactivity is completely feasible with current hardware. The new depth cameras coming out later this year will also aid to this field of development. 3D capable LCD displays are already a reality, the iz3D is on sale for $700 at NewEgg, the Zalman is only a little more. Exciting times, I can’t wait to see what’s next.

What Would You Do With a Million Dollars?

Million Dollar PCs

I’m currently on the market for a new gaming rig and I’ve been assembling a list of various high-end parts. Many late nights have been spent reading benchmark after benchmark, it really never ends! The rig I’m putting together is nothing to laugh at, but boy do I feel chump after taking a look at some of the hardware on MillionDollarPCs. These rigs put almost everything I’ve seen to shame. No doubt the case-modders have spent countless hours and ungodly amounts of money to produce such masterpieces. Wish I had $$$ to burn like those guys apparently do.

Tagged In Motion: Augmented Reality Art

DAIM: Tagged in Motion

Although this is a tad old, I didn’t see it widely posted so here it is. Tagged in Motion is an augmented reality based 3d graffiti art simulation. In a way it could also be considered performance art, as the process is just as important as the final output. The German artist, DAIM, dons a sporty HMD and is able to use tracking-markers to position his virtual can of spraypaint in full 3d. This allows the user full freedom to use his real-life surroundings as a virtual 3d canvas. Judging from the tracking markers, a common convention of augmented reality, it looks like they may be using the ARToolKit but they could easily have their own solution.

Lonely Autonomous Robot Seeks Baby Doll

Lonely Robot

Its seems like decent AI has been “coming soon” for decades now, although there have been evolutionary advancements. Thats where the Robocup comes in, a decathlon of sorts for autonomous AI-controlled robots. The competition, 11 years in the running, is to be held in China this July. The event founders hope to to have their robotic soccer team beat the human world soccer champions at their own game by 2050.

Below is a video of the “pre-game” event, dubbed the German Open. These autonomous robots must traverse an unchartered 3D maze and locate the dolls, simulating a disaster-ridden building. The bots may use different sensing equipment to detect heat, for example, in order to locate the dolls in distress. Its hard to say exactly whats going on in the video but surely future coverage of the event will be a bit more in-depth.

Totally Underwelming AR Avatar

Augmented Reality Mascot

YDreams, a Portuguese ad firm, recently posted a video of their new augmented reality mascot, Flapi. While the demo is rather crude, and the avatar is controlled with a gamepad not AI, its at least a step in the right direction. The company’s profile mentions the paradigm of “reality computing” which they define as:

Reality Computing, which seeks to integrate the digital universe into the real world by creating systems that envelop the user’s senses and establish new approaches for interacting with technology without the conventional use of wires and keyboards.

Video included after the break.

Big Brother Infects Facebook, Takes a Shit on Your Privacy

Big Brother Infects Facebook

The British Police have collaborated with Facebook on a comprehensive surveillance application with aims to do one thing: shit on your privacy. The application, known as ‘The Greater Manchester Police Updates’, gives Facebook users the ability to snitch out their friends if so be it, as well as get information on on-going investigations. This is all well and good, but what Facebook aren’t pimping is the fact the the British police now have back-door access to any and all personal information about you and all your friends, including your political views, sexual interests, copies of all your photos and your social timeline. Even personal data that you yourself cannot have access to, all without a warrant. One can’t help but assume that this system will work in conjunction with the existing video analysis and facial-recognition systems. Scary stuff.

This is eerily reminiscent of Phillip K Dick’s ‘A Scanner Darkly’ and its only a matter of time before other such applications infect the web of social networking. Its really amazing how the science-fiction of yesterday, even from a movie only a few years old, has become the reality of today.
